ESTABLISHED 2015 - BAVARIA - GERMANY
AUSTRIA CURVES 2020
After 2019 where our journey went to Switzerland, we went back to Austria in 2020. This decision was mainly driven by the COVID-19 pandemic which hit the world 2020. Austria was one of the few countries which were open for visitiors without major limitations. We also changed our approach and decided to have one home base where we stayed for 4 nights and did daily trips.
Already on Wednesday we had some highlights, driving through the eastern part of the bavarian alps towards Salzburg. Before entring Austria, the highlight of the day was driving "Rossfeld Panoramastrasse", which offers stunning views on the surrounding mountains. The panoramic road has a length of 15 kilometers and climbs up to 1.570 meters.
Late afternoon we arrived at our home base for next couple of days, the Aktivhotel Alpendorf in Sankt Johann/Pongau.
The rally on day 1 was towards "Salzkammergut", where lots of lakes and mountains are located. Postalmstrasse and around beautiful lakes made it a perfect day. Total length 329 kilometers.
On Day 2 we had Radstädter Tauernpass (1738 meter), Twenger Talpass (1383 meter), Katschbergpass (1641 meters), Nockalmstrasse (2049 meters), Turracherhöhe (1763 meters) and finally Großglockner (2505 meters) on our list. Total length of the rally was 374 kilometers.
Saturday, traditionally the royal stage brought us furthest south into Steiermark, over a distance of 526 kilometers. Passes like Sölkpass (1787 meters), Hochegger Sattel (1340 meter), Packsattel (1200 meter), Hebalpe (1394 meter), Weinebene Sattel (1668 meter), Klippitztörl (1650 meter), Perchauer Sattel (994 meter) and finally via Radstädter Tauern back to St. Johann/Pongau.
Sunday, last day is always a combination of some scenic drives and motorway to get back home.
Given the overall situation it was 5 great days driving together as a team, however the base camp approach will not survive in the years to come....
